26 Clinics/Service Sites across three counties in the San Francisco Bay Area
130 Health Care Providers who offer a range of clinical specialties
Who We Are
NEMS operates 23 clinics and service delivery sites across three counties in the San Francisco Bay Area, with the main clinic located at 1520 Stockton Street in the Chinatown/North Beach neighborhoods of San Francisco; 11 additional clinics in San Francisco’s Chinatown, Portola, Visitacion Valley, Richmond districts, and Sunset districts; as well as clinics in Daly City and San Jose.
NEMS has over 130 health care providers who offer a range of medical specialties, including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Practice, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Dentistry, Optometry, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, and Radiology. In addition, ancillary services such as acupuncture, behavioral health, chiropractic, podiatry, nutrition, pharmacy, laboratory, and social services strengthen the quality of care that patients receive.
The unique multilingual and culturally sensitive direct service staff allows patients to adequately express themselves in a familiar environment to increase the relevancy and excellence of care they receive. Health education programs and health promotion, which bridge the gap between Western and Asian medical practices, are available at the clinic and through social media. The programs address preventative health care education and practices as they relate to the cultural needs of the community.

NEMS History
NEMS was founded in San Francisco’s Chinatown. We secured federal funding to support the creation of a “neighborhood health center” in 1970 and saw our first patients in two loaned exam rooms in 1971.
Established first permanent location at 1520 Stockton Street, San Francisco, which remains our largest and main clinic today.
Approved as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).
NEMS formed a Management Services Organization (MSO) to provide medical and administrative services for managed care Medi-Cal and low-income patients.
Opened first satellite clinic on Leland Avenue in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley. Our growth and expansion of clinics and service delivery sites continues through today, including our first clinic in San Jose in 2008 and Daly City in 2011.
Eddie Chan, PharmD, joined NEMS as President & CEO, succeeding Sophie H. Wong (1974-2003) and Linda Yu Bien (2003-2008).
Attained NCQA Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Level 3 recognition.
NEMS launched Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in the heart of Chinatown.
