Daly City, CA—North East Medical Services (NEMS) is pleased to announce the addition of five new resident physicians to its Internal Medicine Residency Program on Match Day, March 21, 2025. The physician trainees are part of NEMS’ third class of Internal Medicine residents, who will begin their three-year journey to become primary care physicians in Summer 2025.

After an intense review with the recruitment committee, the NEMS Internal Medicine Residency Program has selected the following five physicians as part of the Class of 2028:

The residents represent diverse communities and can speak various languages including Mandarin and Cantonese.

“At a time when the shortage of primary care physicians is expected to worsen,” said NEMS Chief Health Officer, Dr. Kenneth Tai, “we are doing what we can to address this problem by training the next generation of primary care physicians through the NEMS Internal Medicine Residency Program. This program has taken almost a decade to come to fruition, and I am grateful to each person who worked diligently to make this program a reality. We are excited to train the next generation of primary care physicians in a community-based setting here in the San Francisco Bay Area.”

NEMS achieved the Sponsoring Institution accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in January 2022 and received ACGME accreditation for its Internal Medicine Residency Program in September 2022. NEMS is currently training in its first and second year of residents who are expected to graduate in 2026 and 2027.

NEMS Internal Medicine Residency Program has four main partner institutions, including: AHMC Seton Medical Center, Zuckerberg San Francisco General, San Mateo Medical Center, and AHMC Garfield Medical Center. During Postgraduate Year (PGY) 1, 2, and 3, residents will complete the following rotations at these sites: Inpatient Medicine, ICU, Emergency Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, Nephrology, and Hospice/Palliative Care.

NEMS Internal Medicine Residency Program is funded in part by the Health Resources & Services Administration, Bureau of Health Workforce, Teaching Health Centers Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program. Established in 2010, the THCGME program is the only federal program that invests in the training of physicians in community settings other than hospitals. For more than a decade, more than 80% of graduates of the THCGME program have remained in primary care practice compared to 23% of traditional residents. Today, there are 81 Teaching Health Center programs across the United States that are training approximately 1,096 medical residents.

NEMS Internal Medicine Residency Program also receives funding from the State of California’s Song-Brown Primary Care Residency Program and Physicians for a Healthy California’s CalMedForce Program.
